Cinematic Close-Ups, No Distractions - Kacey Musgraves’ Deeper Well Tour

Deeper Well was country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves’ seventh headline tour, with 49 dates throughout North America and Europe. Described as ‘satisfyingly beautiful, pure and high on life’, bringing the Deeper Well album to a live audience needed Vis a Vis Video to echo that sentiment through the tour’s production.

To match the emotional depth and authenticity, Vis a Vis Video designed a flexible, cinematic live production system, including cameras, rail systems and PPU, that helped the team capture Kacey’s personal, intimate performance across a range of arena venues.

Vis a Vis Video built a custom 2m curved rail track system with front-of-house coverage provided by two long-lens URSA Broadcast G2 cameras. These were paired with Canon CN lenses for capturing not only wide-angle, full-stage shots, but also detailed, unobtrusive shots of Kacey’s facial expressions and interactions, without disrupting her connection with the audience. Wireless handheld and handicam units were also deployed to match the energy on stage.

For larger venues, the set design also included a smaller B stage, where Kacey would perform a number of acoustic songs, often bringing on support act, Nickel Creek, to play a special duet arrangement of ‘I’m Gonna Kill my Ex’, which was covered by an additional B60 dolly track.

As the tour had a very tight, back-to-back schedule, break down and load-in had to be as efficient as possible, as the team moved from city to city. Vis a Vis’s modular PPU system, built around [mixer/servers/desk details] and its flight case have been specifically designed for this purpose, enabling the team to get set up in as short a time as possible.

“When Kacey performs, even when you’re in the middle of an arena audience, it feels like she’s singing just for you, so we knew we had to get that close-up coverage, but without causing any interruptions for her or her fans.”
